Cafeteria Redux: The Brunchening

More brunch. This one also occurred when the family was in town, but I’m trying to stagger it so we don’t end up with a blog devoted entirely to brunch (though that’s not a bad idea). We hit Cafeteria again, mostly because this place is a sure bet for great food and they have outdoor seating which is a major plus as the weather gets nicer. There was no wait for the table this time which was excellent (it was about 12pm on a Wednesday) and we got to sit near the open front of the restaurant and bask in the springy loveliness.

I ordered the Mac and Cheese (with cheddar and fontina, $8 ) again, this time as my entree. And again, it was absolute bliss (see previous Cafeteria entry for elaboration). Just look at that cheese. MY GOD.

Last week my boyfriend and I visited Cafeteria in Chelsea to have a special dinner for his 22nd birthday. Here’s how it all went down.

We arrived around 8:00PM on a Wednesday night, and it was surprisingly crowded for mid-week. We left our name with the host and waited at the (also crowded) bar for a table to become available. Not to worry, however, because there is of course a price to be paid for languishing in such hipness. After about 30 minutes into my Blood Orange Martini, a tiny table for two squished between two others opened up. Despite the crampedness, spirits remained high.

Anyhoo, we ordered the famous Mac and Cheese for a starter and it was orgasmic. So so so good. The cheese was a perfectly flavored blend of fontina and cheddar with that crispy baked cheesy layer on top. We practically licked the bowl clean. After that, I chose the Honey Roasted Turkey for my main course while Jon had the Wednesday night special, Fish and Chips, good old Irish boy that he is.
