Retro Music Video-“I Should Have Known Better”

This isn’t really a traditional video- it’s an excerpt from the Beatles’ 1964 film “A Hard Day’s Night”.  Still, it works as a standalone piece, and there’s a lot of brilliance contained therein:

Things I love:

-“Liverpool shuffle”

-The way it cuts to them suddenly having their instruments, without being gimmicky at all.

-When Paul lip-syncs but messes up the lyrics.  They don’t even bother to try cutting around it, which I think is just great.

-The cute blonde inside the cage with them is Patti Boyd, who George ended up marrying. (She also later inspired Eric Clapton’s “Layla”.  What an awesome life.)

-The shaky, doc-style camera and extreme close-ups.  The whole film is intended to be a sort of day-in-the-life, and the cinematography suits that perfectly, without sacrificing some really innovative shots and editing.

-That girl who swipes at Ringo’s head.

-The song itself is so bouncy and upbeat! A lot of their early songs have the typical banal lyrics about wanting to get some action or heartbreak at a party, but this one is wry and exuberant, and I love the harmonica.

This video is a perfect summation of everything that’s right about the movie, too- it’s lightly sardonic, self-aware, and blissfully fun.  At the very least, watch it for the actor playing Paul’s grandfather.  He’s very clean.

My favorite part of this scene will always be Ringo’s doofy ass face and head bob. Hahaha, it’s kinda hilarious. @2:21.

Also, I thought that the guy in the back was Mr. Slugworth but I did my IMDB research and it’s not. Damn…

There’s this running joke in the film where every time the old man is introduced, someone comments on how very clean he is. Apparently it’s because he was on the sitcom Steptoe & Son (we ripped it off and called it Sanford & Son) and the catch phrase on THAT show was that he was a “dirty old man”.

    **The More You Know**

And yeah, Ringo has always called to mind a little lost puppy. Aww, Ringo.
