Any Excuse For Jack White Pictures

I’m, let’s say, moderately interested in the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace.  I tend toward the camp in my favorite James Bond movies (Live and Let Die for the superstitious voodoo stuff, and Goldeneye for the ridiculous Russia guy), but I really enjoyed Casino Royale.  Aside from a painfully brutal torture scene, it was a consistently entertaining reboot of a classic character.  Daniel Craig’s humor, charisma, and intelligence more than made up for the fact that he’s sort of weird looking.

What has me most excited about Quantum of Solace, however, is the new theme song:

Pictured: Not Daniel Craig.

It’s a duet by Jack White and Alicia Keys, and it sounds like basically exactly what you would expect if The White Stripes did a James Bond theme.  Crunchy guitars and clangy pianos are accompanied by the epic string arrangements Bond themes are known for.  As a Jack White song, it’s kind of unpolished and derivative (although under-producing songs is kind of his trademark, this song stands out as being kind of unremarkable).  As a James Bond theme, though, it’s totally completely awesome.  Keys soulful voice adds a lushness remniscent of Carly Simon’s lovely “Nobody Does It Better” (kindly ignore the weird montage of Sean Connery pictures).

Bond themes tend to either be totally awesomely rocktageous (see: Live and Let Die”) or achingly mediocre.  I predict “Another Way To Die” winds up firmly in the former category.  I’ll almost definitely be seeing Quantum of Solace in theaters, if for no other reason than to hear the song in surround sound accompanied by sillhouettes of scantily-clad ladies, because really, how can you lose?

Not Daniel Craig.

these specific jack white pictures definitely belong in the category, “men who look like old lesbians” or whatever it was. a kind of impish old lesbian, who i guess is cute nontheless.

ugh i wish the music video was just jack white singing into a camera, “Boys and Girls” style. sigh.

Yeah, music videos for songs from movies are almost always subpar. At least there’s not a ton of footage from the film cut into it- just that last shot, and the famous gun-barrel frame.

Has Alicia been bench pressing her piano or something? She looks tough as fucking nails. Maybe it’s all that weird physically-hitting-the-oo-ooee-aaa-aahs thing she’s inherited from Ms Aguilera that’s got her beefed up.

As for the song… meeeeehh. Especially that call-and-reply thing they do. Reminds me of all the bratty kids on trains and in waiting rooms who never learnt how to convincingly fake-cry for the sake of a Wispa.

I’ve listened to it a few more times since I posted this. The call-and-response thing is kind of uninspired, because I mainly just want to kick Alicia Keys in the teeth for interrupting a potentially wicked solo. It also feels like he only wrote half a song- the second part is just the same as the first. Given that the intro will only be a minute or two long, though, I suppose it’ll work.

i only just got around to watching this and my comments are as follows:
    the song is pretty awesome
alicia keyes looks like she’s got the beginning symptoms of pink eye
and jack white’s hair is getting more and more intentionally ugly, now resembling the grow-out phase some kind of jank folk ‘do or prince valiant cut from the 70s
