Beijing Olympics: Men’s Synchronized Diving

Commentator just said of Dmitry Sautin, Russian competitor in the synchronized men’s diving, “Everyone likes this guy. They just love him.” Another fact about Dmitry Sautin? In 1991, he was stabbed FOUR TIMES in the stomach. Well, somebody doesn’t like him. Synchronized diving is a fairly new addition to the Olympic Games, and at first, I thought it was kind of stupid. Like, wow, two dudes diving at the same time. Not especially more impressive than one dude. But after watching a few rounds as they progressed in difficulty, it became apparent that mastering these moves in conjunction with another person is actually really hard to perfect.

Sautin is especially remarkable because this is his fifth time competing in the Olympic games, and he’s 34 years old. He’s got more medals than any other diver in Olympic history, and part of the reason he’s still competing is because Russia doesn’t want him to quit (for good reason!) I think in this sport, and possibly others, (I haven’t watched everything), the Chinese seem to be getting an unfair amount of favoritism from NBC’s commentators. Yeah, they’re good, they’re precise, but not to the degree that the commentators make out. AND let’s not forget that they have an unfair advantage, insofar as the crippling pressure that if they don’t win, their government will execute them quietly for the good of the nation.  The American pair just did a pretty great job on a difficult looking dive, all flipping and spinning and stuff, that hopefully can redeem their last, quite poor performance. Other facts about synchronized diving? It gives you a hot bod, just like in swimming. Call me a commie, but I’m rooting for Russia in the diving. пойдите Россия! победите соревнование!

I guess that comment about China executing failed athletes was meant to be a joke. I hope so…

Hi, I’m Chinese too. I really love him and even hope he can get the golden metal. There is something I need to clarify, the Chinese government would never execute those who doesn’t win quietly. Even they lose, they are still heroes of us and win the respect of the Chinese people. We love Sautin! Best wishes for him!
