Obsession: Flight of the Conchords

Whenever I stumble upon a new TV show I like, the rest of my life is put on hold. Dishes pile up in my sink, my voicemail box reaches capacity, and flies start buzzing around my head because god damnit, showers aren’t important anymore! However, I place the blame entirely on The Flight of the Conchords. Because their first season is available on iTunes, hitting the “next” button after each episode is like popping candy. Deliciously musical candy of the crack-based variety.

Fresh off the boat from New Zealand, folk-duo Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Celement hit New York in hopes of making it big, with help from their pathetic and geeky manager Murray. The two have a sort of Napoleon Dynamite vibe, as they cluelessly bumble around Chinatown, looking for girls and writing songs. With an episode structure that consists of 2 music videos in each, Bret and Jemaine sing (or rap) about their surroundings, pulling direct queues from pop-phenomenons like The Beatles, Lord of the Rings, 80s fighting montages, and David Bowie.

The result is not only a hilarious TV show, but a series of high-end viral videos that can stand alone themselves. Paired with an awesome soundtrack, these kiwis (the show’s creators), have successfully created an iTunes store triple threat. Check the clip below, where Bret’s low self-esteem generates nightly visits by the spirit of David Bowie, resulting in a magical intergalactic groove-ship of ingenuity.

Okay, we need to watch all of this together, and then we need to watch Velvet Goldmine, because I can’t get enough of people doing impressions of David Bowie. That clip was great.

Yes! I have never seen party monster.

“Hey Bowie, do you only have one sequined space suit or do you have enough to make ch-changes?”

In their interview in Bust magazine, the two confessed that they must have talked in a Bowie accent for the equivalent of 300 hours, “at least.”
