Girl Find: Cosmetic Market

I first stumbled across Cosmetic Market for the first time last summer when I was visiting my building’s management company on 39th and Madison. The place was small, crowded, and somewhat disorganized, but chock full of beauty treasures. Their stock consists of brand name cosmetics and beauty products, sometimes at less than half the normal price. So imagine my complete despair when I went for a makeup shopping binge and found Cosmetic Market GONE. It was like they picked up and left town, with not a goodbye letter or breakup call. I was crushed. It was like going to the freezer for your pint of Ben and Jerry’s after a long hot day in the sun, only to find that your roommate has finished it off. I went online and googled Cosmetic Market, hoping to find a website or explanation as to what had happened, but was unsuccessful.

I gave up hope and forgot about it until the other day when, during a cab ride, we sped past a new and improved, Cosmetic Market! Only two blocks away from its original spot on 39th and Madison, I immediately noted the new location, on 37th between Madison and 5th Ave.

I headed up there today and there it was, with a beautiful new sign and glass storefront, like a makeup gallery. I feared that perhaps the prices weren’t going to be what I remembered, and that maybe the beautiful, giant new store would drive up costs. But lo! I went inside the clean, organized, crowd-free (I assume everyone else was at the Puerto Rican Day Parade), wide-aisled store and everything was cheap as chips. For example? Stila Rouge Pots for $4.99 ( normally around $18 ), Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse foundation for $3.99 (normally $8-12), and Biore Face Wash for $2.99 (normally around $7). And so maybe not everything in there is fresh from the factory or “this season’s colors” (whatever that means), but it is all factory sealed and brand new, and they have a pretty great selection for 50% cheaper. And they sell other random shit, like Fruit By the Foot, a box of which I got for $1.99.

If you want retail therapy, and you want it cheap, check out Cosmetic Market. It’s a great alternative for when you can’t spare the cash for Sephora and is even cheaper than Duane Reade. Or for when you’re desperate for a serious makeover, a $4 collander, and some Fruit Gushers.
