Falling Down, Shot by Shot

Awhile ago, I said I’d write why I find the “Falling Down” music video featuring a Scarlett Johansson song and her as a PLAyaH interesting and here’s why: (best find the video, work with me). This music video stands out because it seriously de-romanticizes glamorous lifestyles, notably acting careers, and it shows how being adored is taxing and lonely.

The way we’re accustomed to seeing celebrities- as still subjects- smiley, gorgeous– or under the momentum of whip pans deludes people into believing that their lives are rich. Scarlett shows that this beautiful life is really a beautiful lie and that it really really sucks. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this before.

Watch the video. Notice that Scarlett’s fashion shoot is intercut with an ugly, poisoning insect. Why an insect? Is she this insect? Or are they insects?

Everybody stands around her watching her every beat (even though she’s very nonactive). What are they getting out of her? Nothing more than a pretty face, on a page. And what is she getting out of them? Some complements, some flowers. Nothing special.

The world she lives in passes her by fast. It isolates her.

Everyone’s an insect, feeding her their lines, feedings her their ideas and pitches. Shit is sped up and “hyped” but in a sad place and time.

Eyes going through REM speed up 150 percent. Avant Garde, Warholesque. Insect like.

On the road, driving through the Holland Tunnel.

We’ve all been there, and it’s hellish: you’re defeated before the arrival. yeah…..

Alone in bed, thinking over things.

Feeling lonely.

Air creature?

Why have something like this:

It’s deflated and sad, lifeless but animated.

Scarlett gets her makeup done.

Makeup artist is literally drawing on her eyes. She looks dead.

The director reads over the TO DO list of the day. Scarlett’s listening, but isn’t giving her input. She doesn’t look happy.

Agents block her to look at her! This is my favorite!

Little kid, lying down, enigmatic. People are still watching her.

Reclusive, alone in her car away from everyone else.

Never posting again. Too much work.

I think she manages to make the song her own, although I think I prefer the Tom Waits version. I’m glad she doesn’t try to glam up her voice to much- it’s simple and husky, and that’s how she sings. The video is also really simple, but your analysis of it is really good.
