Glass City

I went back home this weekend to see a public screening of a film I spent 13 days helping to shoot over the summer.  It’s the only feature I’ve worked on so far, and I am certain it will always remain a unique experience.  First of all, the script was based upon a group of people I know, at least as acquaintances.  It was directed by one of those people, and the writer/producer/cinematographer was the guy who started the theater group upon which the film was based.  The main character was named after my best friend, and it’s set in my hometown.  So it’s pretty close to home already, in a very literal way.

Then the filming experience was just incredibly awesome.  It was like summer camp, with more drinking and lugging heavy lights around.  After watching every scene a half dozen times from different angles, it was incredibly surreal to see it on a big screen, with a sold-out audience.  (Yeah, there were 494 seats in the theater, and we brought in more chairs to create a few extra rows.  We ended up selling 540 tickets.)  It’s not a perfect film.  Some dialogue is stilted, scenes are choppy, and some actors are stronger than others.  It manages to strike some real emotional chords, though.  More than one scene made me tear up.  Even when the movie misses, it was awesome to watch because of what a blast we had shooting it.

Most of all, it’s an impressive testament to what someone can do with enough gumption.  Yes, I said gumption. What of it?  John Klein wrote the script, got the crew and equipment together, found locations, managed to wrangle over $40,000 out of investors, and has produced a film that so far nearly 1,000 people have seen.  That is pretty inspiring.  Let’s go make stuff, you guys.

Actually part of the Glass City drinking game is that you must take a shot every time someone gets irrationally angry!
